What remains of our perception of ourselves when everything that gives us definition is stripped away? The face is one of the most recognizable forms of human presence. We search it for character, emotion, and history, trying to identify familiar features and assemble them into a coherent image. But what happens when the image itself resists completion? In this work, the face both emerges and eludes us. It possesses an almost hypnotic clarity, yet the lines crossing it and the surrounding space prevent us from perceiving it as something definitive. It feels as though we are witnessing several states of the same image at once: it emerges, acquires contours, disrupts its own boundaries, and gathers itself into a whole once again. Black, white, and shades of grey create a space where attention is drawn not to colour, but to structure, movement, and the collision of lines. The golden marks become distinctive points of attraction. Amid the graphic tension, they seem to preserve the presence of light — not as a decorative accent, but as a value in its own right, something that cannot be entirely dissolved into the surrounding chaos. The composition resembles a map of unknown territory: there are directions, intersections, fragments, and traces of movement, but no single route leading to a definitive understanding. The face remains at the centre of this system without dominating it. It exists within an ongoing process of formation, as though identity itself does not precede our experience but gradually takes shape through it. I am interested in the question of personal boundaries. To what extent do we truly define ourselves? Where does our inner structure end, and where does the influence of time, circumstances, other people’s perceptions, and experiences begin — the things that change us even when we fail to notice? Perhaps we search too insistently for something unchanging within ourselves — a core that must remain the same under all circumstances. Yet human beings are not static. We constantly reconsider our beliefs, change direction, discover contradictions within ourselves, and uncover qualities we never imagined we possessed. And yet, change does not necessarily mean losing ourselves. Sometimes, it is precisely our capacity for change that allows us to see ourselves more clearly. The woman’s gaze remains steady amid the visual chaos. It does not attempt to halt the movement of the lines or offer a resolution to the contradictions. This is not the gaze of someone who has already found every answer, but the presence of someone who maintains clarity within uncertainty. This work is a reflection on identity as a process rather than an outcome. It explores the possibility of remaining true to oneself without turning one’s identity into an immovable structure. Perhaps our authenticity lies not in finding a final form once and for all, but in preserving the ability to become someone new without losing our connection to ourselves.
